Here at Sun Design, every design-build project we undertake follows a meticulous and proven process. This process is for the benefit of our clients but also ensures our team can work efficiently and effectively to deliver amazing results.
Today, we’re talking all about the pre-construction meeting. This falls under Step 4 of our design-build process and is one of our favorite meetings to bring the design and build of the project together with the entire team.
Learn more about the pre-construction meeting and let us know if you have any questions. We’re always here to help.
What is a pre-construction meeting?
Our pre-construction meeting — or pre-con meeting — is where we discuss logistics and expectations with you before starting construction on your project. This meeting is a critical part of the process. It occurs at your house, after your project design, budget, drawings, and selections have been finalized and your schedule outlined.
Our pre-con meeting was developed slowly over many years. We evaluated every project to identify the most common concerns or stressors. We use a purposeful, strategic approach to this meeting — it follows the same format for every client.
The goal of this meeting
The goal of the pre-con meeting is to hand over the project from the sales and design team to production, in front of the client.
Why is this meeting important? We want our production team and you, the homeowner, to be on the same page from the very start. It’s meant to help manage and set expectations, and start the construction phase on a strong foot, with the least amount of stress possible.
What to expect during your pre-construction meeting
The whole team will start the meeting sitting together at your house. We can gather in your living room, around a kitchen table, or even on the patio! We’ll have a checklist to make sure we don’t miss any of the important details we need to discuss.
Here are a few things you can expect:
- Review the contract one more time and make sure we’re all on the same page
- Meet your team and set up some expectations for communication
- Talk about any outstanding issues from sales and design
- Find out what your needs are from us during the project
- Outline a few things we’ll need from you to get the job done quickly and efficiently
One of the most important parts of this meeting is a home walkthrough. The entire team (salesperson, lead carpenter, homeowner) walks through the project areas and discusses the project.
We’ll discuss site protection strategies and logistics, including:
- Pictures or decor that need to be removed from the wall to prevent peripheral damage
- Access to the house
- Familiarizing ourselves with the area we’re going to be working in
