Transforming a Forever Home in Hollin Hills

When these Alexandria, VA homeowners purchased their home in the prestigious Hollin Hills neighborhood, they envisioned a forever home that offered both luxury and practicality. Their goal was a single-level living layout with an open floor plan perfect for entertaining guests and everyday family life.

Open-Concept Main Living Area

To create a seamless flow throughout the main level, multiple walls were removed, opening up the living, dining, and kitchen spaces. The kitchen now features a large center island with a cooktop and a KitchenAid retractable downdraft ventilation system, preserving the open sightlines the clients desired. Natural light floods the space through 22 custom Steel City double-pane aluminum windows, while the Shiloh Maple “Spice” cabinets and Caesarstone Raven countertops provide a contemporary, upscale aesthetic. Decorative lighting, selected by the client, highlights key areas, including island pendants over the kitchen and sconces in the living area.

Creating the Perfect Primary Suite

The newly designed primary suite includes a spacious walk-in closet and a luxurious bathroom with a large shower. The suite also integrates a compact laundry room for convenience. High-end finishes throughout include Shiloh Maple cabinetry in Arctic white, Mirabelle undermount sinks, Pfister “Bronson” polished chrome faucets, and travertine Durango Cream countertops. Custom Steel City semi-frameless shower doors and mosaic tile floors complete the elegant spa-like experience.

Functional Powder Room Addition

Previously, only a hall bath was available on the main level. To accommodate visitors, a new powder room was added featuring a Kohler “Archer” pedestal sink, Delta “Ara” polished chrome faucet, and coordinating tile finishes for a cohesive, stylish touch.

Custom Interior Details

Throughout the home, attention to detail ensures a cohesive design. Interior doors are primed and painted with brushed nickel hardware, while oak railings with white-painted balusters add warmth and contrast. Walls, ceilings, and trim were painted to complement the luxurious finishes, and hardwood oak flooring spans the main level, creating a rich and inviting atmosphere.

Enhanced Storage and Built-Ins

Custom Shiloh Maple built-ins in the living room provide both functional storage and display space, complemented by Steel City clear glass shelves in the fireplace niche.

Sun Design handled the renovation of our large basement several years ago. We finished our laundry room and added two walls of built in cabinets, reconfigured a storage room and run-down kitchen into a guest room and sitting area, and finished a large rec room.
