Project #1: From Isolated to Integrated – A Kitchen for Family
Location: Clifton, VA
Desire: Rick and Kelly had used Sun Design before and reached out this time for help reconfiguring the main level, particularly the kitchen. They wanted their kitchen to better accommodate the daily family dynamics, particularly with kids activities, like teammates coming over, and hosting friends. As well, they wanted to update the kitchen to compliment the grandeur of the house and property overall. They have a stunning back yard with a pool and asked us how they could both maintain and enhance a connection to the pool/sports courts and outdoor views.
Solution: We expanded the kitchen, repurposing what was unused office space, to accommodate two generous islands – one designed for seating and gathering, the other for prep and cooking. This keeps the spaces designated without being isolated. Ample counter space makes it easy to serve a crowd or simply enjoy casual time together between activities. A strategically placed beverage fridge keeps guests out of the main work zone, preserving a smooth kitchen workflow. We preserved the original bay window in the eat-in area and added a large new window in the expanded section, bringing in even more natural light, and enhancing the connection to the backyard.

Project #2: A Primary Suite Designed for Comfort and Care
Location: Fairfax, VA
Desire: An aging-in-place goal that required both style and accessibility. The two main motivations for our clients to remodel their primary suite was a mix of aging-in-place needs and just wanting more space! They envisioned a more accessible primary suite and more storage. For example, they wanted huge his/her closets. They knew that this house is their forever home, so any changes would need to reflect their personal style and carry them comfortably into their golden years.
Solution: Since our clients wanted the remodel to remain within the home’s existing footprint, we took the existing primary bathroom and closet space to create a large ADA luxury bathroom. We used the existing bedroom space for the new “her” closet – truly huge! The pop-top addition over the garage was designed as the new primary bedroom and “his” closet.

Project #3: Adding Space and Style – A Seamless Home Addition
Location: Vienna, VA
Challenge: Todd and Jessica came to Sun Design with an issue not uncommon among NOVA homeowners – they loved their location, but needed more space. At the time, they had 3 children ranging between 5 and 13-years old, and lived in a 3-bedroom/2-bathroom home. Their in-laws were frequent guests, often staying for long stretches during the summer. The couple told us that, as much as they loved bringing the family together, they couldn’t ignore that their home was feeling cramped.
Solution: We designed and built a large pop-top addition, approximately 1,125 square feet, above the existing home, that includes a secondary primary suite and two additional bedrooms connected by a shared bathroom. On the main level, we reimagined the layout with a partially open design to accommodate a larger kitchen. A small bedroom was removed to make way for a spacious dining room that comfortably seats eight, and the hall bathroom was updated as well.
Creative Design Highlights:
● Added new staircase for the pop-top above existing staircase to maximize space on main level
● Replaced a rear-facing bay window with sliding glass doors for easy access to the backyard.
● Exterior detailing, to elevate the home’s style and curb appeal, include a board and batten facade, black trimmed windows, doors, and downspouts, along with a new roof.
Before & After: This major home remodeling project in Vienna was a true entire home makeover that delivered comfort, flow, and functionality. The creative design solutions added meaningful space, increased the home’s overall value and curb appeal, and significantly improved the lives of our client’s, Jessica and Todd.
