Our Proven Home Remodeling Process
Design quality in home remodeling depends on visualization accuracy, structural expertise, and documented outcomes that families can verify before committing. Sun Design addresses these concerns through 3D previews, integrated architectural design-build services, and a portfolio of industry-recognized family remodel projects.
3D Renderings Reduce Decision Risk
Sun Design provides 3D renderings that allow homeowners to evaluate spatial changes before construction begins. This visualization approach addresses a common challenge for families considering open-concept layouts, dedicated play zones, or reconfigured main levels: understanding how proposed changes affect sightlines, natural light, and daily circulation. The 3D previews show furniture scale, window placement, and how rooms connect to outdoor spaces. For households with young children, this capability helps identify safety considerations and traffic flow patterns that drawings alone cannot convey. The visualization tools are part of Sun Design’s structured five-step process, which begins with a complimentary virtual consultation with a design consultant. This initial conversation focuses on understanding your goals, determining whether Sun Design is the right fit for your project, and preparing for the in-home consultation where custom concepts can begin to take shape.
Integrated Architectural Design-Build Streamlines Execution
Sun Design operates as an architectural design-build remodeler, combining design development, interior selections, and construction management under one organization. This integration means families work with a single team rather than coordinating between separate architects, interior designers, and general contractors. The company employs more than 50 staff members across offices in Clifton, McLean, and Bethesda, giving it the capacity for structural work, including opening load-bearing walls, raising roofs, and delivering full-scale additions. Weekly construction check-ins keep families informed of progress and create regular opportunities for feedback during the build phase. Sun Design’s service area covers Northern Virginia, Southern Montgomery County in Maryland, and Washington, D.C., regions where strong housing demand and limited inventory make remodeling a practical alternative to relocating. According to Angi’s 2024 State of Home Spending report, 67% of homeowners prefer to renovate rather than move, a pattern consistent with families prioritizing school district continuity.
Industry Recognition and Warranty Support Document Quality Outcomes
Sun Design has received multiple industry awards from NARI, Professional Remodeler, Qualified Remodeler, Remodeling Magazine, INC 5000, and regional business publications. These awards evaluate design execution, project management, and client satisfaction through third-party judging processes. The company backs its work with a 3-year workmanship warranty and provides a final Warranty Package containing permits and inspection documentation. A dedicated Client Support Manager and Warranty & Services Manager handle post-project scheduling and repairs. Founded in 1988, Sun Design has operated continuously for over 35 years, developing institutional knowledge about structural reconfigurations and family-oriented layouts. The company runs Remodeling + Design seminars and Remodeled Home Tours, including a “Growing Family” tour that shows completed three-story additions, expanded kitchens, and recreation spaces.
Design quality in remodeling becomes tangible through tools that preview outcomes, processes that maintain accountability, and track records that demonstrate consistent results. Sun Design’s visualization technology, integrated design-build structure, and documented warranty program provide families with verifiable checkpoints throughout planning and construction.

Step 1
Consultation and Planning:
Let’s Get Acquainted.
Next, we will prepare a Design Agreement, which will outline the scope of your project. At this time, the agreement is signed and design fee is paid, which is later credited to your construction contract. Now we are ready to start. Let the excitement begin!
Step 2
Design and Review:
The Magic of Creation.
We’ll arrange a review meeting with you once the plans are ready, to look over them in detail. Depending on the complexity of your project, there may be only one design review meeting or several.
Step 3
Final Budget and Materials:
Details, Details, Details.
Next, we schedule a Production Team Review where your entire project team meets at your home. The Sun Design team will take this time to review plans and confer with one another on any outstanding questions.
On the same day, we’ll also meet one-on-one with key trade contractors scheduled to work on your home. This ensures that everyone working on your project understands both the schedule and plan.
Once all of the selections and designs are finalized, we’ll present and review the complete budget, drawings and selections in a Contract Budget and Plan Review Meeting.
Step 4
Construction and Check-In:
Off To Work We Go.
We consider this a critical part of the process, as it is our goal to make sure that we are meeting your expectations and keeping you updated on the schedule every step of the way.
Step 5
Completion:
Enjoying Your New Space.
Then, all you have to do is relax and enjoy your new space!
